Chapter Summaries:
Chapter 1:
Tally Youngblood had a best friend named Peris. He turned pretty a while ago but Tally still has 3 months before she’s turned pretty too. But Tally couldn’t wait to see Peris anymore. So at night, she snuck out and went to pretty town. Uglies weren’t allowed in pretty town and she could get in trouble. She started off and thought she had gotten caught when a huge burst of what sounded like an alarm go off. It was just a bunch of people dancing to a beat in a bunch of masks. And that’s when she got an idea.
Chapter 2:
Tally put the pig mask on and started towards Garbo Mansion (where Peris lived). As she was walking, she saw people jumping off of a building and screaming all the way down until he was caught by a jacket. There was a party going on that night and Tally had started searching the floors and then some people noticed her. Then, they started chasing her. She bolted up the stairs and then found a place to hide. Everybody else thought she went on the roof but one person stayed behind. It was Peris. He asked her what she was doing there and she told him she had to talk to him. Peris said that she shouldn’t be there and that they would be best friends again when she was pretty. He told her an escape route and that’s how she ended up pulling the fire alarm, and jumping off of the building with the same thing that she saw the person jumping off with.
Chapter 3:
She jumped and fell down. She unhooked herself and ran into the garden. She ducked into some shrubs and hid while a police officer scanned faces to see if they were pretty or not. They didn’t catch her and then she saw someone. Staring straight at her. She croaked out “sorry” and then saw that it was Shay. She was an ugly too. They were both trapped. She pulled a hoverboard out of the bush and they started to go back to Uglyville. They were going to go to the bridge but Shay was scared it was going to tattle. Tally has a relationship with the bridge though.
Chapter 4:
Shay is teaching Tally how to hoverboard at the park but Tally keeps on falling off. Tally keeps on complaining about the crash bracelet because it is hurting her wrist. Shay is trying to explain to Tally that her feet need to be in the right spot and she needs to extend her arms. Then Tally started to speed towards some flagpoles. Tally made it through the flagpoles without hitting them and was very excited but then she spun around on the board and the board thought it was a turn and dumped her off. When they were done hoverboarding they sat in the grass and started talking and then they found out that they had the same birthday. That means that they will be turned pretty on the same day and go to New Pretty Town together.
Chapter 5:
Tally and Shay were going through Tallys possible faces when she turned pretty. Then Tally asked to see Shays morphos but Shay said she never made one. So then Tally said that they should make one but Shay said she just wanted to go hoverboarding. Then Shay got mad and said that she was fine just the way she was. Shay also said that they could change how smart they were instead of how pretty they were.
Chapter 6:
Shay wants to take Tally out for a night hoverboard ride. But instead of breaking into New Pretty Town, or riding out to the suburbs where the parents live—because who would want to do that? Shay wants to ride out into the wilderness, to go see the river rapids and the ruins of a city.
Chapter 7:
By the city, the river is smooth and calm; but upstream, the river turns wild, with white water and rapids. It's almost like the setting(calm by the city, wild outside the city) is trying to tell us something. But then Shay and Tally have to walk a bunch because there's no metal for their hoverboards to hover over.
Chapter 8:
Tally and Shay finally get to a point where they can hoverboard again. Tally is scared that the hoverboards will suddenly give out but Shay assures her that there is a lot of metal that is on the ground. Suddenly a big structure appears in front of them. It's a roller coaster. Shay tells Tally to go fast on the roller coaster. She's having a lot of fun until the track isn't there anymore. The roller coaster was broken when the town was destroyed. A rush of panic comes over Tally and then the ride is over. Tally thinks Shay is crazy because she had fun. Shay suddenly wonders if someone she knows is there.
Chapter 9:
Shay lights a safety sparkler to signal her friend David. They wait for a while, but get no signal back. Shay thought he wasn't there so they started back to Uglyville. Tally turned around one more time and thought she saw a flicker of light. She waits for another but doesn't see one so didn't bother to tell Shay. Tally then jumps on her hoverboard and races Shay back to Uglyville.
Week 2:
Chapter 10:
At the end of the summer, Shay and tally decide to do one more prank. With the help of a bungee jacket, they frighten a bunch of new uglies by pretend fighting and throwing shay off of a high balcony inside the library. Then they decide to go swimming and they get in a real fight about the situation with being pretty.
Chapter 11:
Tally feels like the oldest ugly in her dorm and is all alone now that she fought with Shay. And she's got one week to go before they turn her pretty. But everything will be better once she's pretty. Then Shay shows up with equipment for one last, big trick: they're going to run away to the hidden town where David lives, the Smoke—and never get turned pretty.
Chapter 12:
Today Tally was finally about to turn pretty. She had waited for the car to come and get her. Tally wasn’t nervous about the operation and she knew that the pretty’s had always told her that the only thing that hurt was the skin, and that felt like a pretty bad sunburn. Tally kept thinking about Shay for a while until the car arrived. The hospital was really big. It was at the bottom of new pretty town. The driver dropped her off and asked if she was ok. She wanted him to stay but didn’t want to seem childish. She walked into the doors of the hospital and waited. Tally had been waiting for an hour which seemed like forever. Suddenly, a man walked in. He was a strange looking pretty. He had asked her to follow him and that there was a problem with the operation. Tally followed.
Chapter 13:
She was directed into a hovercar and brought past uglyville, over the greenbelt, and by the factories that stuck their heads up. They landed with a thump and she followed the strange man into a building. The building walls were a yellow-brown color. The man stopped at a door and let the door scan his eye. He then told her to go inside. She met someone named Dr. Cable. They had brought her in there to see if she knew where Shay was. There were other uglies that had gone to where Shay was going. Tally had told them that she didn’t know where Shay was going and she said no, although she did have the note only she could understand. Tally had been told that if she didn’t find Shay, she would never be turned pretty. And she wanted to be pretty so bad. The scary man was waiting for her outside the door.
Chapter 14:
Tally had just got back to the dorms after being told that they would not make her pretty. She went into her dorm and saw that all of her stuff had already been thrown out. Then all the uglies were getting back and she new that they were talking about how she wasn't being turned pretty. Tallys parents came to see her. Her and her parents were talking about what happened and about Shay. Tally says she can’t help the special circumstance people because she made Shay a promise. Her parents tell her that she should break the promise. Tally asks if she could go home with them but her parents say it would be best if she just stayed at the dorms.
Chapter 15:
Tally has been hiding out in her room. But at night she has been going hoverboarding. One night when she got back into her room Peris was sitting in there. Tally had hoverboarded through a bunch of tree branches. Peris was asking her about special circumstances then he started saying stuff about how much she would love being a pretty. Then Tally said that she couldn’t be turned pretty because she made a friend a promise that she would keep a secret that they told her. After that Peris said that she made him a promise too. Tally then agreed to keep her promise to Peris. After Peris left Tally sent a message to Mr. Cable and said that she would do what he wanted.
Chapter 16:
Back at Special Circumstances, Tally tells Cable that Shay talked about David and the Smoke, the town where he lives in the wilderness.Tally hands over Shay's coded instructions on how to find the Smoke, but Dr. Cable already has a copy of those instruction. Only, since it's in code, she can't figure it out.Which is why Cable wants Tally to go find the Smoke on her own. Cable provides Tally with a set of equipment for camping—water purifier, solar-powered hoverboard, dehydrated food, sleeping bag, set of Doctor Who DVDs.And Cable also gives her a tracking device in the form of a heart-shaped pendant on a necklace to activate when she gets to the Smoke.Tally's still feeling a little hesitant, until Cable reminds her of the blackmail situation: Either Tally infiltrated the Smoke and betrayed Shay, or she'd be an ugly for life
Chapter 17:
Tally sneaks out one last time—this time on official business. She's got a fancy new hoverboard that can go quite fast. Which is good because she needs to get to the Smoke real fast or they might realize that she left after her birthday, which would be weird. So Tally jets off to the Rusty Ruins to deal with Shay's weird note. The first part says to "Take the coaster straight past the gap”.7The second part says "Until you find one that's long and flat”, which Tally eventually figures out is a reference to a long, straight roller coaster-like track—a railroad track. The third part of the note says to stick near the sea, so that's the way Tally rides.
Week 3:
Chapter 18:
On her trip, Tally sees what the railroads.as she is there she reads shays note, which Tally ignores a bit. Which is why she almost falls down into the sea when she crosses a crumbling bridge. So Tally celebrates her near-death experience by making some of her dehydrated food called "SpagBol."
Chapter 19:
When Tally wakes up, folds up her hoverboard to make the worst mistake with a broken bridge. the worst mistake is to fall down through the gap. But luckily, the river under the bridge has enough stuff to keep her from crashing into it. So she rides her hoverboard up the river for four days. Tally then finds out that SpagBol gets very boring after four days. After eating, Tally decides to take a bath in the river. Which is freezing cold and while Tally is bathing, she hears a big machine thingy coming toward her.
Chapter 20:
A big flying machine (helicopter) came to her camp and it blew around all of her stuff and Tally could see people inside. Tally hid in the water when it was there. The helicopter left very quickly. Then Tally got out of the water to get her stuff and saw that she barely lost anything. Tally started going again and then got to the point where the river branched in two. She was trying to decide which way to take. “Four days later take the side you despise” was the direction and Tally remembered that she told Shay that she didn’t like the right side of her face so she went right. Then Tally got to the next direction but she couldn’t find any “fire-bug eyes”. After trying to understand the directions she went to sleep and when she woke up everything was on fire.
Chapter 21:
Fire was everywhere and Tally was running away from it. Tally was trying to find the river and eventually she got to it. She found her hoverboard and she realized that the big flying machine was spreading the fire. She tried to get away on her hoverboard but the flying machine went right over causing her to fall into the river. She was struggling in the water and then the people in the flying machine pulled her at of the water and she saw what they looked like “bug eyes”.
Chapter 22:
Tally was pulled out of the water and they gave her some “oh-two” and that made her feel better. She then started asking all of the people on the helicopter what they were doing and where they were taking her. They turned out to be allies with the smokies. A while later they let her off and she started walking to the next clue. A bald hilltop. She knew the only way to be pretty was to betray her friend.
Chapter 23:
A couple of hours later Shay, David, and Croy came to get her. There was a long walk to make sure nobody could track where they were located. There was a bug in her hoverboard so they quickly got rid of it. They started walking and talking about all of the orchids and Tally and Shay’s relationship. They then finally made it to the Smokes.
Chapter 24:

He said how his parents are doctors and how they got the operation but they reversed it.
Chapter 27

She then said that she did the same thing and Tally about the Smoke when she was supposed to tell anyone. Then Tally begins to cry and Shay tries to comfort her.
Chapter 31:
Tally and David go to see David’s parents. They decide to tell her the truth about the operation to make someone pretty. They tell her that they’ve noticed that after the operation, a group of cells form together in the brain, making them become more “mature” and like having the operation. They had talked forever about the topic, and David’s parents seemed to like Tally.
Chapter 32:
Tally, David, and his parents stayed up forever talking about changing their faces back to normal, and how the operation affects the brain. Tally started to get tired, and David notices, so he says they should probably go. They were walking back and Tally saw a “pretty” look in his eye. David kept talking about how beautiful she was. More beautiful than Shay. They were noticing all of the scars and scratches on each others faces when suddenly, they kissed. He held her pendant and she tensed up. She took off the pendant and crushed it in her hand. She then threw it into the fire and there was a loud pop. They departed, and she went to her sleeping bag, and slept. In the morning, special circumstances arrived.
Week 5:
1. Tally was alone in the bunkhouse when Special Circumstances arrived. She ran for the door and went outside without any shoes on. She crept on until someone called her name. It was the boss. They made a plan to go out at the same time and the boss would distract the special while Tally ran into the woods with all of the magazines. But she didn't have any shoes. The boss gave Tally ground up Habanero pepper to throw into the special's eyes while the boss ran away. He pushed her out into the open and Tally charged at the Special. The special ducked and Tally fell down. Tally kept distracting the special while the boss tried to escape. The special turned around and saw him though, so Tally threw the pepper into the Special's eyes. She screamed and Tally ran for it. She ran into the woods but got pepper in her throat and had to cough. She didn't though and the feeling went away. She exhaled but somehow, a different special heard it. He forced her head in the dirt while she was coughing like crazy.
2. They took her to a rabbit pen where a bunch of Smokies were handcuffed. She was too. They called her a resistor and pushed her in the pen. She got up and saw Croy. He said he was wrong about her and thought that she was the reason Special Circumstances arrived. They talked for a while and then the specials brought Shay into the pen. They called her "unarmed but dangerous." Shay started yelling at her and said that this was all Tally's fault. Croy was on Tally's side though. They scanned Tally's eye and told her to go with them.
3. They brought Tally to what used to be the library. Dr. Cable and Tally talked for a while and Dr. Cable questioned her about the missing pendant. Tally said it was hidden because she was afraid the Smokies would find out about her idea to tell Special Circumstances about them. Dr. Cable said that Tally and an officer would go and get the pendant if she "hid" it. Tally said ok and they put handcuffs on her. She led the officer to a roof and said it was on top of there. There were hoverboards on the roof. He got onto the roof but couldn't find it so brought Tally up there. Tally "tripped" and the special grabbed her and pulled her back onto the roof and let himself fall down for her. He got back on the roof and said she wouldn't fall if she didn't have handcuffs on so he took them off of her. She snapped the hoverboard shut and he fell off of the roof while she got away on the hoverboard.
4. Tally is riding a hoverboard without any shoes on after gerrig away from Special Circumstances. She passes over the captured Smokies and they are all cheering for her. Tally starts to make her way out of the Smoke as the Special Circumstances are chasing her in hovercars. A hovercar passes over her but they don’t see her. Tally is doing everything she can to make sure they don’t notice her. The hovercars can sense heat so Tally gets off her hoverboard and makes it look like she fell off and then she hides in the cave so she can go unnoticed. When Tally gets in the cave she realizes that there is someone else in there to.
5. David is the one in the cave with her. Tally and David wait for a really long time in the cave waiting till they can not hear the hovercars anymore. Then David starts asking Tally about what happened at the Smoke. Then Tally lies to David about how she got away from the Specials. Tally has the idea to go and try to look for David's parents. Tally tells David about how she has already been to special circumstances headquarters which is where they are going to go to find David's parents. When Tally tells David about already being at special circumstances headquarters before she has to make up a lie about why she was there. Tally says she was caught by pulling a big trick and then David tells her she is amazing since she is willing to go back.
6. Tally and David leave the cave. They wait a while at the top of the mountain, looking down. They go down to the smoke and find a pile of and find a pile of shoes in the pen where everyone had been held. Tally knows this was a symbol for her. David insists that they go to his parents home to check on them to see if they are ok.
7. When tally and david arrive at davids parents house, they see that the home had been burnt to the ground but there is still hope that his parents are still alive. David and Tally take supplies to a cave that was prepared for emergencies. They gather up the supplies and decide to head back to the Special Circumstances headquarters and rescue his parents and others.
8.Tally and David travel in the desert for many days. They camp out at an old city, once belonging to the rusties. David tells tally that this particular city is where the fate of the city was determined by an infection. They started to make there way to the rusty ruins when a big storm hit.
9. They got out of the desert and started to travel along the river then they got to the sea. Eventually a storm hit and they had to huddle up in a tent for 3 days. Tally and David got in a fight and David stood outside in the storm for a while. After that they talk while in the tent about their childhood and Maddy and Az. The storm ends and they continue on their way. David and Tally are talking about Shay and what might happen with her. They get close to the city. Now Tally is having to teach David things about the city. David keeps on getting nervous about getting caught. They get close to Special Circumstances and Tally is explaining things about them to David and they are trying to figure out how they are going to get in. Tally gets an idea bungee jackets.
Week 6
1) Tally and David go to the Uglyville art school to get the bungee jackets. Tally quickly gets the jackets and is back out of the building. They are talking about what could happen when they get to Special Circumstances. They see some kids looking for David and they know they are looking for him because of the sparklers. David thinks that maybe the kids are going to be able to help them. Tally and David are talking to the Uglies and then they have to make up a lie on why they couldn't take the to the Smoke yet. The Uglies agree to help them by making a diversion.
2) Tally and David wait all day until the Uglies set of the diversion. The diversion is a bunch of sparklers that are set of and spell out “the smoke lives”. After it was set of hovercars from Special Circumstances started to head towards New Pretty Town. Tally and David rode their hoverboards over to where they needed to jump off and once they got there they jumped over the wire. Tallys bungee jacket didn’t activate until she was very close to the ground. Then Tally was bouncing all around until she was finally able to stop. Tally pulled herself to the top of the roof and David was there already.
3) Tally and David are trying to think of a way to get into the special circumstances building. Then they jam the hovercar door. They get in by going down the elevator shaft. When they got out of the shaft they were in the room where the operation was done. Tally and David were trying to figure out where to go next and they decided to go farther down. They found the interrogation rooms then they found Dr. Cable in one of the rooms but David knocked her out. Then someone turned around and it was Shay.
4) Shay was a pretty now. She explained that since she caused the most trouble, Dr. Cable said she could go first. Nobody else was pretty except for Shay. Then Dr. Cable’s tablet started to ring. Shay answered and said that Dr. Cable was busy. David and Tally started opening up the cells and letting out all of the Smokies. But Special Circumstances got curious. David was curious about why they were leaving Az there. Maddy said there was nothing to do to help. They got to the elevator and used Dr. Cable’s eye to get in. They went to the roof and Tally said there were four hoverboards. They made a plan of who was going to ride a hoverboard together and then David asked where Az was again. Maddy replied “Your father’s not pretty David, he’s dead.”
5) Maddy grabbed a knife from Shay and cut out a piece of their jumpsuit. It had a tracker in it. Tally called the hoverboards and they were on their way across the lawn. Alarms were ringing. Tally went to go get the boards and Specials came to try and get her. She managed to get away and Maddy handed her the jumpsuit cloth to throw in random places to throw the specials off. Shay went with Tally on a hoverboard while everybody else went different ways. They didn’t have crash bracelets on so if they fell, they would get hurt really bad. They talked for awhile and Tally tried to convince Shay that there was something wrong with her brain. Shay started talking about David and then tried to make Tally feel better, it didn’t work.
6) Tally and Shay made it to the cave first, and then Croy came tumbling in. Croy told them that David and Maddy went to the ruins and that they were supposed to meet them there tomorrow. They wanted to be alone but Tally wanted to go. Croy said no though. It had taken a while but they all fell asleep. In the morning, she woke up to the smell of PadThai. Shay wouldn’t stop complaining about being out in the wild. Later, the went to the ruins where David was waiting. David and Tally embraced, and talked about Az for a while. Maddy had kept Dr. Cable’s tablet and found notes. She thinks she can find a cure for the lesions.
7. Davids mom and Tally talk to Shay about getting her pretty brain fixed. Shay doesn't want to, she just thinks they are all jealous of her pretty face. She says she is happy the way she is. Tally wants David’s mom to do it forcibly. She explains to Tally about the Hippocratic Oath and that if she forces Shay she will become just like Dr. Cable. In the end Tally volunteers to be the willing subject.
8. David is surprised by Tally volunteering. David’s mom says it wont work unless she has the lesions and she doesn't. Tally says she will when she turns pretty. She confesses to David that she was a spy. David’s mom already knew, Dr. Cable and Shay had told her. Tally is grateful she let her tell David herself. Tally wants David to be the one to come and get her after she has her operation. David is upset and runs off. Tally wants to go after him that night and turn herself in to Dr. Cable.
9. Before leaving Tally writes herself a letter so that she wont change her mind about removing the lesions. She leaves David’s mom with a written consent that Shay writes for her so she can be operated on. Shay is glad Tally is going to be pretty and feels like she messed up things for tally in the beginning. Shay and Tally head back to town. A warden is surprised to see a pretty and an ugly together. When they see the warden at the end, Tally says, “Hi im Tally Youngblood, make me pretty.”
