Character Bio's:
Peris:
When Peris and Tally were both uglies, they used to play all sorts of ugly tricks, like breaking into New Pretty Town and basically causing a fuss. So Peris was like Tally and.....
Shay: she thinks that it doesn’t matter what everyone else does she just does what she wants to. She doesn’t want to act or look like everyone else. She thinks that everyone else cares to much about what other people think of them. She thinks that people should not have to change what they look like just to be happy. Shay likes to hoverboard she is also a risk-taking trickster who is friends with Tally Youngblood who was apart of a dangerous gang at one point, and she has gone missing to this point of the story. I think that Shay fears being like everyone else I think she fears being in a world where everyone is Pretty. Shay has just turned 16 years old. I think her motivations are not being turned Pretty and not being like everyone else and getting to David and the city where you can be ugly your whole life.
Descriptive Paragraph
On page 141, paragraph 3
“But the lights stayed on, and Tally’s nerves were soothed by the roar of white water, the cold slap of spray in her face, the thrill of bending through curve after curve in the moon-speckled darkness. The board was smarter than her old one, learning her moves in a matter of minutes. It was like graduating from a tricycle to a motorbike: scary, but thrilling.”
I think the mood of this paragraph is excitement because I feel like Tally is excited to be back out by the roller coaster hoverboarding. Although at first, Tally had been mad at Shay for making her go to the rusty ruins, when Tally returns by herself, she feels at peace. She had missed the water and the roller coaster. And, Tally had noticed how fast she had been going. When she first went to the rusty ruins with Shay, she had taken it slow. Now, she is moving faster than ever before and that had probably washed away all of the troubles and she felt free.
Changed paragraph
But the lights stayed on, and Tally’s nerves were worried by the quietness of white water, the warm slap of spray in her face, the calmness of bending through curve after curve in the bright light. The board was more unskilled than her old one, learning her moves very slowly. It was like graduating from a tricycle to a motorbike: normal , but boring.
I think that the new mood is loneliness because when I was reading this it seemed as if the quietness and calmness of everything around her would make Tally lonely.
Novels
- 1. Pretties
Shay: Shailene Woodly
Tally:
David: Theo James
Croy:Tom Cruise
Peris: Paul Walker
David’s Parents:
Shelagh Fraser was an english actress born in the 1920’s in london. One of her major roles was in Star Wars: A New Hope. She sadly passed away in 2000
Phil Brown was an american actor born in 1916 in Cambridge, MA. One of his major roles was playing owen larson in Star Wars: A New Hope. He also sadly passed away in 2006.
We decided to cast Shelagh Fraser and Phil Brown to play the role of the parents in our movie because they did such a great job playing Owen Lars and Aunt Beru in the movie “Star Wars: A New Hope.” Also, they both are fit to play the parents role in our movie because they both had at least one child. Although both of them have passed, they could still play decent role in our movie.
Peris played by Paul Walker
Paul Walker was an american actor, born in 1973 in Glendale, CA. He played major roles in the Fast and Furious movie franchise. He passed away in 2013.
We chose Paul Walker to play Peris in our movie because Peris is a tricky person in the book, and Paul walker has a tricky and sly persona in the Fast and Furious movies. Also, they both have brown eyes and they are overall nice individuals and good people.
We chose Shailene Woodly to play Shay in our movie she played beatrice in divergent. She is 24 years old and she also played in The Fault In Our Stars.
We chose Shailene Woodly because Shay is a rebel in the Uglies she doesn’t do what she is supposed to just like Beatrice in Divergent. They both also do what they feel is right. They both don’t agree with the authorities like when Shay runs away because she doesn’t want the pretty operation. Both of them leave home because they want to have a better life for themselves Shay goes to the rusties and Beatrice goes to the Dauntless faction
We decided to choose Theo James for the role of David. Theo James played the role of Tobias Eaton in Divergent. In Divergent, Tobias is supposed to be very adventurous, and loving. He always goes out of line, and gets away with it. He’s one of the leaders and takes care of everybody as much as he can. In the Uglies, David is very sweet to Tally, even though she is new and not many people trust her. He plays a leader, and his hands, with all of the blisters and scars, show he’s a hard worker. David always stands up for Tally, and listens to her.
Theme
You should accept people for what is on the inside and not on the outside

Oddly Normal by: Otis Frampton
Week 5:
Theme:
Major Theme: The major theme of the story is to never judge a book by its cover.
- Character: In the beginning of the book, Shay said that David was really sweet and nice and wanted her to come to the Smokes. That could have made somebody feel like the people in the Smokes are too caring and nice, and just play with animals all day. When in reality, they were lifting all kinds of metal and such everyday and were very strong and ready to fight.
- Conflict: Towards the end of the book, the title shows that the Smokies actually do fight, and were showing resistance, and strength against Special Circumstances. For example, David shows Tally the knife that his dad always brought around for safety and such. He was always prepared for this day to come. The title relates because the Smokies are all underestimated because they aren’t “grown up” yet. They are thought of as weak. But you don’t have to grow up and be a pretty to be intelligent and strong.
Tone:
Definition: the general attitude of a writing, story, or situation
One pertinent issue: One pertinent tone is being worried. Tally is always taking charge and being brave but she’s scared that so many things can go wrong. She is worried about David, and Shay, and all of the Smokies lives. She’s also worried about the body heat detectors and that she could’ve possibly led Special Circumstances right to David as well as herself. Many people in real life can be worried about things such as people or items that mean something to them.
Terms: “Had she led them to David? That would be perfect, her final betrayal.” In this excerpt, it shows how worried she is about her friend and his safety from the operation.
“She relaxed, finally letting out a breath.” This shows that she was so worried about being caught, that she dared to even breathe.
metaphor
examples
Pg. 294- “and her posture suddenly transformed into something animal”
Tally is comparing the Special to an animal whereas the thing she is talking about is a human. She is fast like an animal and is strong and acts somewhat like an animal but other then that they are incomparable
Pg 349- “a dark and threatening mountain of clouds”
The clouds look like mountains but that is their only similarity
Antagonist- Dr. Cable
Metaphor- Dr. Cable is a monster
Dr. Cable is really horrible and is ruining Tally’s life and so she is acting like a monster
Conflict
A big conflict is in the chapter “Invasion”. Special Circumstances finally comes in this chapter but Tally is confused on why they came because she never activated the heart pendant. I think that Tally kind of believes it happened since she threw the pendant into the fire which was a few hours before they came. Tally remembers Dr. Cable telling her she will be there a few hours after the pendant is activated. “She remembered Dr. Cables words: We'll be there in a few hours. Tally forced the thought from her head. This attack couldn’t have anything to do with her.”
The most import part of this conflict is “Through everything else, the forms of the cruel pretties moved. Their gray uniforms passed like fleeting shadows through the confusion. Graceful and unhurried, as if they were unaware of the chaos around them, they set about subduing the panicking Smokies. They moved in a blur, without any weapons that Tally could see, leaving everyone in their wake lying on the ground, bound and dazed.”
Also
“The Specials weren’t attacking the large group at the mess hall. They waited patiently in a ring around the building while their numbers increased, more hovercars landing every minute. If anyone tried to get past the cordon, they reacted swiftly, disarming and incapacitating whoever dared to run. But most of the Smokies were to shocked to resist, paralyzed by the terrible faces of their opponents. Even here, most people have never seen a cruel pretty.”
The overarching conflict is that Tally thinks that the attack is her fault and Tally is seeing that the Specials are not going to have a hard time getting the Smokies captured. The Specials aren’t even needing to use weapons and they are still winning the attack. They are going around gathering up the Smokies in a calm and swift manner. I selected because I think this conflict is really making things tough on Tally it ruined her friendship with Shay and it is making it almost impossible for Tally to tell the truth. Also this conflict I think shows the end of the Smoke.

Minor Theme:A minor theme of the story is to accept people for who they are because you never know what they can do
- Plot and Conflict: The plot and conflict play a big role to determine the minor themes of the novel Uglies. For example, when tally gets pulled from the group and is sent to special circumstances, she doesn't know what to think. So she has to accept herself for who and what she is, even if she will always be an ugly.
2. Symbols: The symbols in the novel Uglies play a contribute to the minor themes. For example, if you read the book, you know that the symbols of the book as in the smokies accepting everybody for who they are, is somewhat of a parallel to the real world where people have to accept one another for who they really are.
Alternative Endings
Pg. 283 Tally slipped into her bed, as happy as could be. She was now happy and the weight of the world was off of her shoulders. She dreamed happily that night. She pulled on her shoes and walked outside. Shay gave her the death stare and continued to breakfast. Tally needed to tell her.
Tally ate breakfast next to David, while David was trying not to give any signals to anybody that they were together. Breakfast was over and they started leaving to work. She pulled on her gloves, but decided now would be the time she’d talk to Shay. Tally looked around and spotted Shay on her way up the hill. She pulled her into the woods and Shay was trying to get away. “I need to talk to you Shay.” Tally said, worried about her response. “Why would you talk to me? You have my boyfriend and seem pretty happy, why should I be in the way?” Tally didn’t know it would be this bad. “Shay, David and I, well, we kind of kissed…” Before she could say anything else, Shay was bright red and shouting. “I bring you here and this is my reward? My crush, and you just stole him! I don’t know why I trusted you in the first place. Now I know this was a mistake.” The words hit Tally hard. She looked up and Shay was halfway up the hill.
She saw David and he looked hopeful that everything was ok. Tally shook her head. They finished their shifts for the day and headed to dinner. They ate in silence.
The next morning Tally woke up and slipped on her shoes. It was cold so she brought a jacket. She did the same thing almost every single day. If Shay had given her the death stare the day before, now she would look absolutely terrifying. Tally avoided Shay that morning and went straight to work. Shay showed up an hour later and started working too. They were the only ones up there. “Oh great.” she thought. Suddenly, there was a scream and Shay was on the ground. A piece of metal had cut her. There was blood rushing from her arm, where a huge scratch was. Tally thought quickly and took her jacket to tie around Shay’s arm. That would slow down the bleeding until Tally could get her some help. Tally grabbed Shay and together they walked down the hill. She brought Shay to the little clinic behind some cabins.
“We were bringing down metal when she cut her arm.” Tally explained as the Smoke doctors examined her arm. “Was the metal rusty?” one of the doctors said.
“I don’t really know. I wasn’t paying attention to the metal, just her cut.” They thanked her and Tally went back to work. She didn’t understand how Shay had cut her arm. She’s been working here longer than she has so she knows how to handle the metal. Tally decided that she would visit Shay after her shift. David said that he would go down to the clinic with Tally but she decided it’d be better if he didn’t.
Her shift ended and Tally started to walk to the clinic. She didn’t know what to say but she had a feeling that she had to be there. Tally walked in and Shay was laying on a cot, tears streaming down her face. Tally walked in and Shay looked mad for a second, but then the look went away.
“You care about me.” Shay said.
“Of course I do Shay. I never meant to hurt you like that.”
Shay smiled and said “I’m sorry I over reacted. I got upset.”
“It’s ok Shay. It was my fault. How’s your arm?” “Awful” Shay said. “They wrapped it up but won’t give me anything for the pain.” Tally frowned. “How long will you be in here?” “They said at least a couple of days. They don’t want to risk it getting infected.”
They talked for what seemed like 10 minutes when they said Tally had to leave. It had already been two hours. They said goodbye to each other and Tally left.
David was waiting outside for her. He grabbed her hand and asked her how everything went. “Great. Shay realized that I would never mean to hurt her like that. We talked about everything that happened when we weren’t hanging out and it was amazing.” “I’m glad to hear that” David said. The longer Shay and Tally talked, the more they became closer, and soon they were best friends again.
2 alternative ending
“No Tally you can’t” said Shay.
“Why Shay, if you don't take them then I will” Tally said. Tally knew that the only way to get her friend back was to make sure that the pill worked. She had decided that it was better to have a friend that was angry with her then a friend that was completely different. “I already have a plan, I am going to go to Dr. Cable and tell her I was crazy and didn’t know what I was thinking but that now I am finally ready to get the operation.”
“But what if something happens, what if Dr. Cable is angry at you and has the doctors mess up the operation.”
Maddy cut in and said “Shay what changed your mind I thought you wanted Tally to come back with you, I thought you wanted her to become pretty.”
“I don’t know what happened everything seems to have changed, I never expected Tally to do something so risky. I wanted her to become pretty but now if she is going to become pretty and have you cure her she is going to have to escape which is going to be hard. That is just if Dr. Cable lets the operation go well. It will be to risky Tally could get hurt.”
Maddy whispered to Tally “I have no idea what is going on, I didn’t think that someone with the lesions would ever say things like Shay is. Shay seems confused on what is going on too, I think that somehow with the situation that is going on Shays old self is starting to speak.”
“Do you think that she is being cured on her own?” Tally asked.
“No I don’t think she is being cured on her own I just think that the lesions may not completely take over the brain I think that some of the old thoughts and old feelings may not be totally locked up from the memories.”
“I agree with Shay you shouldn’t go it will be to risky. Maybe we can get a uglies that is turning Pretty soon and convince them that after the operation is over to let us give them cure” David said.
“David there is something I need to tell you. I’m not just going because we need to see if the cure works it’s also because I need to make it up to you, to Shay, to everyone that lived in the Smoke. I went there as a spy for Dr. Cable and I had to decided to stay in the Smoke and not reveal it. But then what I didn’t know was that if it was damaged it would send its location to Dr. Cable and when I threw it in the fire it was damaged. I was the cause of all of this, I didn’t mean to and I’m just, I’m so sorry David. I’m sorry Shay. I’m just so sorry.” Tally finally said. Tallys big secret and she finally told it.
“No Tally, how h-how could you, I mean why didn’t you just tell us when you decided to stay at the Smoke we could have disabled we could have sent it somewhere.”
“You see David this is why I have to go I have to make things right. You don’t have to worry about me once I get the operation you can come get me and I’ll take the cure. When we see it works we can give it to Shay and she’ll be better.”
David couldn’t even look Tally in the eyes. He just couldn’t believe that all of this was Tallys fault. He didn’t know what to say. “Enough of this weird silence, I don’t care if you think you owe it to me Tally. I don’t care if you think you owe it to anyone, you aren’t going.” Shay said breaking the silence.
Tally, David, and Maddy are still wondering what has made Shay think like this. They just know that the lesions did not completely change Shay.
“Shay if Tally doesn’t go and you refuse to take the cure then how will we ever figure out whether or not it works?” Maddy asks.
“I have already decided that I am going.” Tally says
“No I won’t let you I-I-I’ll take the cure.” Shay saids much less then confidently like she had to force herself to say it.

Quotes:
Conflict:
This book kept me on the edge of my seat almost every minute of it. There was so much action and excitement. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves adventurous types of books!
Characters:
“What a great novel, the characters really helped me understand what it was like to really be different from everyone else! It left me wondering what was going to happen on the next page. It was amazing!
Setting
The way the author described the settings you could really picture it. There were a couple different settings and I could picture all of them in my head as I read the story. The setting really helped make this be a great novel. Just picturing the places Tally traveled through on her journey really helped me understand the novel.
Driving the Story:
We think what’s driving the story is characters.
Beginning: At the beginning of the story, Shay and Tally were both in Prettytown, which is a big prank if you’re not a Pretty. If Shay had wanted to be Pretty, and never was in Prettytown, Tally and her could’ve never been friends, and Tally wouldn’t have met the people she’s closest to.
Middle:
If Shay had wanted to be Pretty she never would have ran away to the Smoke. If Shay would have just stayed in the city Tally would never have went to the Smoke. In the chapter “Lies” when Tally first got to the Smoke if she would have wanted to stay there right away if she would have wanted to stay ugly she could have told them about the pendant with the tracker in it. If Tally would have told them about the tracker right away then none of the outcome would have been the same. If Tally would have told the truth when she got to the Smoke the novel wouldn't be the same.
